How Can I Engage My Audience?

ree

Maybe you’ve been there - at a conference or meeting where no one is listening and it seems like the clacking of everyone’s keyboards is louder than the person presenting. But what if you’re the one presenting?

This question came up in my coaching session the other day, so I thought I would share some tips for you to get folks away from their screens and hanging on to your every last word…

1. Start with a strong hook. Capture your audience's

attention immediately with an intriguing question, a surprising statistic, or a compelling story that relates to your topic. This will make them want to focus on you rather than their devices.

2. Make your content highly relevant and engaging. Ensure your speech directly addresses the audience's interests, needs, and challenges. When people find the content valuable, they're more likely to give you their undivided attention.

3. Use interactive elements throughout your presentation. Incorporate audience participation techniques like:

 - Asking questions

 - Inviting brief discussions or sharing of experiences

 - Requesting volunteers for demonstrations or activities

4. Employ a conversational format. Consider switching from a traditional lecture-style presentation to a more engaging format like a fireside chat, panel discussion, or Q&A session. This can make the audience feel more involved and less likely to retreat to their devices.

5. Use visual aids effectively. Incorporate compelling visuals, props, or demonstrations that require visual attention and can't be fully appreciated through a computer screen.

6. Establish ground rules. At the beginning of your speech, politely request that attendees put away their devices and explain the benefits of being fully present. You could frame it as a collective agreement to maximize the learning experience.

7. Use storytelling techniques. Weave personal anecdotes or case studies throughout your presentation to maintain interest and emotional connection.

Remember, the key is to make your presentation so engaging and interactive that audience members naturally want to put away their devices and participate fully in the experience.

What tips do you use to keep your audience engaged?
